The Friends is a nonprofit, membership organization. As a member, you’ll have the opportunity to help form the ideas and activities that make the Friends of Louisiana Wildlife Refuges a unique and important organization. You have a choice of active committee appointments and can work on projects of special interest to you and the entire membership. You join a unique group of individuals who have grown to be great “friends”, as they share the rewards of promoting educational and environmental projects throughout our refuge system.

Committee Opportunities

 
 

Volunteer Committee

 
 
The Volunteer Committee is chaired by one of the Refuge Rangers and      works to recruit and support volunteers. Activities of this Committee include:
 
 
     • Develop a lay “docent” program for designated refuges.
 
 
     • Develop corps to assist with environmental education programs.
 
 
     • Develop corps to assist with weekend interpretive programs:
 
 

           • canoeing
           • birding
           • nature walks
           • biking

 
 

     • Develop regularly scheduled work projects at each Refuge:
           • clean up
           • trails development/maintenance, etc.

 
 
     • Identify volunteer needs by Refuge and function
 
 

     • Oversee RV volunteers and Interns  

 
     
 

Education and Training Committee

 
  Chaired by a Refuge Ranger this Committee will works to design and implement education and interpretative programs to schools and community groups (Garden clubs, Chambers, Service Clubs, etc.) Other activities might include:  
       •
Design, develop and regular adult community based lecture series for the general public. (Wildlife gardening workshops, landscaping with native plants, stewardship of resources including litter abatement, saving threatened & endangered species, importance of wetlands, how to expand & develop economically without urban sprawl, importance of green spaces, clean water & air, recycling, land erosion, woodland protection, water safety -- Hands on nature study.
 
       •
Develop annual training schedule including school programs, community programs, Nature Camp, etc.
 
       •
Conduct regular workshops/training programs for Friends members, general public and Service staff.
 
       •
Develop collaborative programs with other community groups with similar interests.
 
       •
Develop training programs for specific volunteer needs – equipment operation and safety, wood duck box checking, bluebird boxes, canoe safety, history and refuge facts, etc.
 
       •
Develop interpretive trails throughout each of the Refuges and Lacombe Center in cooperation with Volunteer, Grants and other Committees, as appropriate.
 
       •
Represent Southeast Louisiana Refuges in development of Master Naturalist Program in Louisiana

Marketing Committee

 
 

The Marketing/Advocacy Committee is composed totally of lay people in our community.
Its responsibility includes:

Maintaining web site as a key ingredient in effective communication with membership and other interested persons.
 
       •
Newsletter
 
       •
Publicize/ advertise Friends/Refuge programs
 
       •
Maintain media relations
 
       •
Develop and Implement Advocacy program for Southeast Louisiana Refuges with appropriate legislators and/or legislative personnel
 
     
 

Grants/Fundraising Committee

 
 

There are many opportunities that cannot be met without effective resource development.
The Grants/Fundraising Committee:

 
       •
Identifies Refuge needs
 
       •
Develops a program of apply for grants
 
       •
Oversees grant implementation
 
       •
Reports regularly to Board and Membership
 
       •
Develop/Implement Fund Raising plan
 
     
 

Membership Committee

 
       •
The Membership Committee will design and implement an annual membership campaign.
 
       •

Develop and conduct “Refuge based” Interpretative and Educational programs for members? If so, what type? How often?
 
       •
Maintain membership and other contact information (mailing, email lists, etc.)
